Gilchrist, an Australian ambassador speaks of his entry into Foreign Affairs following his military service in WWII, his first overseas appointment as Second Secretary to Britain in 1947, his work at the Military Mission in Berlin, his impressions of Dr. Evatt, his posting to Greece in 1949, his involvement with UNSCOB, a United Nations Field Commission, Second Secretary in Jakarta in 1950, the difficulties in building and maintaining good diplomatic relations.
