- Summary:
-
An artist's book that can be worn as well as read, produced in collaboration with the French maker and restorer of paper, Michel Guet (with whom Dorothy Herel was awarded an Australia Council Research Grant in 1991 to further explore papermaking), as well as the French typographer and printer, Thierry Bouchard. The work was completed in Canberra. In her obituary for Dorothy Herel, Elizabeth Cross notes that in the 1980s the artist (who made no distinction between the applied arts and so-called 'pure art') designed costumes for the Canberra based dance companies the Human Veins Dance Theatre (Under the Skin, 1980, Illusions, and Maya, 1985) and the Meryl Tankard Company (Banshee, 1989). In the same period, she also produced exquisite and original clothing (which existed in a realm between haute couture and nouvelle vague, and transcended the boundaries between art and clothing), before going on to produce this transitional work. In her essay in Fragmented Threads (1997), Elizabeth Cross further notes, "Text Vest acts as a cipher, transcending the genre from which it is drawn to become, like the Lewis Carroll text it incorporates, a punning, witty, poetic item of equivocal status."

This project was assisted by the Australia Council."-Colophon.
