-
Peter Kingston's artist's book of linoprints and etchings (interspersed with brief texts and lively sketches) pays homage to the work of early Renaissance painter Piero della Francesco (especially his Defeat of Chosroes), amongst other fragments collected over three visits to Italy in fifty years. In his Epilogue, Kingston writes, "Piero embraces even the most disturbing narratives of humanity by rationalizing them within his calm, logical intelligence. Thereby he forgives, and allows us to do the same..." In his introduction, Barry Pearce invokes Justin O'Brien and Jeffrey Smart, two other Australian artists who Kingston memorialises, and who share his admiration of Piero's stillness, and writes, "Kingston's interest in a pictorial vernacular quite different from his own is a fascinating phenomenon. For his restless eye, manifesting its discoveries through a beguiling, broken style of spontaneity and distortion, is the product of a personality one doesn't immediately associate with stillness. He is something of a dragonfly-una libellula-capable of being motionless when he so chooses, before suddenly darting unexpectedly here and there with a quivering, flickering line to seize his quarry and add it to his wonderful wunder-kabinett baggage of recollections. And his curiosity is always profoundly respectful."
