Summary

'Picturing the Island' takes the form of a collection of texts and images that by their proximity to each other present the Central Pacific island Banaba (once known as Ocean Island) as a recollection. This regrouping grants these memories another moment of life. Most of the images were found in the collection of State Library of Queensland, as were many of the texts. The book also includes translations of phrases from Gilbertese (the language of Kiribati) to English and vice versa. These texts are drawn from a Kiribati/English dictionary based on the work of one of the first missionaries to live in Kiribati.
