- Summary:
-
This large-scale artist book celebrates a year in the life of Old Parliament House in Canberra. The book is structured architecturally and temporally, moving month-by-month through the social and political history of the building and the country. Melinda Smith's poetic interests include drawing human stories out of historical records like Hansard, and she also uses wordplay processes such as acrostics, puns and anagrams. Some of the text takes a group of Old Parliament House hand-painted wooden signs as their inspiration, outlining directives to visitors and politicians alike, and playfully rearranges their text using a cut-up method. There are over fifty poems through the book, all hand-set and hand-inked; the labour involved limited the number of copies, so a more accessible chapbook was also produced: Members Only (Canberra: Recent Work Press and Ampersand Duck, 2017). Because of its smaller scale and print-on-demand reproduction, Members Only cannot reproduce all the elements of 1962, which an only be experienced by handling the larger handmade book's hand-inked pages. -Based on the exhibition room brochure.
