- Summary:
-
Contrasting pairs of concepts, with each specimen represented by a single image and word, attempt to demonstrate the unexplainable nature of the world in simple terms. The captions (and illustrations) can be translated as: good/evil (angel/devil), light/dark (Persil/the Christlich-Soziale Union logo), round/square (Coca Cola/poison), young/old (the Freie Deutsche Jugend socialist youth movement/a socialist hammer emblem, the national coat of arms of East Germany, in use from January 1950 to May 1953), fast/slow (Zeus lightning bolt symbol/child's drawing of an airplane), dangerous/harmless (fork/spoon), gray/colourful (mouse/butterfly), thick/thin (Dürer's rhinoceros/a human skeleton), much/little (25 years/25 marks). The text is set in Fette Block / Extrabold Block type, and letterpress printed on laid paper. The format and content was suggested by Comenius' 1654 children's book Orbis Sensualium Pictus (Visible World in Pictures), but the Heraclitian enantiodromia (or tendency for things to change into their opposites) is updated to include Coca Cola and Persil, and references to politics.
