Hope Verity Fitzhardinge (nee Hewitt) was born in Glen Innes, New South Wales in 1908, a teacher, bookseller and grazier. She was educated at Glen Innes Grammar School and the University of Sydney (BA, 1929). She taught at Telopea Park Intermediate High School, Canberra; Abbotsleigh Church of England School for Girls; Bradfield Park migrant camp; and Captains Flat school. She also taught in Wellington, New Zealand following a visit to the United States of America in 1935. On this trip Verity met and fell in love with George Lacey Lee, whose memoir she prepared in her seventies, but she went on to marry Laurence Frederic Fitzhardinge in 1936 and returned to Canberra. She opened Verity Hewitt's Bookshop in 1938. The Fitzhardinges moved to Sydney in 1945, but in 1951 resettled in Canberra where Verity ran an orchard at Narrabundah with the help of a multinational workforce of European migrants. In 1959 they left the orchard and moved to River View, a farm near Queanbeyan, NSW. Here, and on another property they acquired near Captains Flat, Verity raised pedigreed Devon cattle. Her scholarly research included Russian-Australian relations in the nineteenth century (MA, 1965), and on the establishment of the north-west frontier of Afghanistan, 1884-1888 (Ph.D.,1968).
