Summary

Poster of artwork promoting the Australian and British national airlines, showing two Batak sculpture totem poles (from northern Sumatra) topped with stylised squatting human figures. A small darker grey shadow puppet figure (probably the Javanese wayang kulit character Petruk) overlaps the I of Indonesia and below it is a small silhouette of a Lockheed Constellation with its distinctive triple-tail design. The totem poles are brown against a predominently yellow background, and have ribbons tied around them.

Biography/History

“Frank Nanninga (1920-1999) was born in Medan, Sumatra, son of a Dutch banker. The family returned to the Netherlands where Frank studied at the Royal Academy of Art, den Hague, until interred as a hostage by the Nazis. By 1950 he was a commercial artist with one known exhibition at David Jones, Sydney. He worked at CSIRO Canberra 1963-1970, illustrating The Insects of Australia.” — Geoff Thompson, “ From Woodcuts to Cutting Edge - looking back and looking forward at insect imaging”, Entomological Society of Queensland Bulletin, Volume 41, Issue 1, March 2013, http://www.esq.org.au/archive/NewsBulletin41/ESQ%20Bulletin%2041[1]%20March.pdf, viewed November 2017.

The Lockheed Constellation airliner was the mainstay of Qantas’ fleet in the 1950s. Qantas operated this aircraft (built from 1943 to 1958) from 1947, and began replacing them with Boeing 707s from 1959.
