Annotation. Braeside From the Beginning recreates the history of a farm on Three Moon Creek at Selene near Mulgildie in the Upper Burnett region of Queensland. Braeside's story is one of occupation and transformation over the past 170 years. The traditional owners, the Gooreng Gooreng and Wakka Wakka people, were dispossessed of their country by land-hungry Europeans in the mid-nineteenth century. As their community dwindled and survivors were removed to reserves, the Aboriginal people from Mulgildie disappeared. The Mackay brothers on Dalgangal Station were the first Europeans to take up the land on which Braeside now sits. These squatters and those that followed occupied a huge expanse and created a rural economy based on sheep, cattle and horses. The pioneering lives of the stockmen, the station managers, and their wives and children were isolated and lonely. The squatter's grip began to loosen, and pressure mounted to free up land for closer settlement and smaller scale farming. By 1924, farm blocks in the Upper Burnett were thrown open for selection and Braeside was created. The selectors arrived, cleared the brigalow for cultivation and developed a dairy industry. Despite droughts, floods and fluctuating commodity prices, the community grew, and the families of Selene and Mulgildie settled in. Their successors introduced machinery, constructed contour banks and more substantial buildings, changing the face of the countryside.
