“This book provides an overview of the importance of horticulture in the history of Dover. Included are references to Agricultural Shows; Church fairs and competitive show (for fruit, vegetables, cookery and needlework) as well as flower shows and the Dover Horticultural Society; local show gardens and community groups. Most important to the development was the work of Mr W Jackson Senior, who arrived in Dover (Port Esperance) in 1898. He was important to the development of the area in so many ways-as a Magistrate doctor, Municipal Warden and much, much more. It was after he was forced by ill health to retire that he became passionate about daffodil growing. Long term residents, Mrs Margaret Davis and Miss Lil Chennett were also part of this early development. Mr Jackson tutored others in the skills of hybridising daffodils, raising seedlings, judging quality blooms, and competing in flower shows throughout the State. After his death in 1948, those he mentored continued his passion, officially forming the Dover Horticultural Society. Local people most prominent were his son Tim Jackson, Hedley Reeve, Eric Rowe, Ron Exter, Ernie Cripps and Bob Bird. Others are also mentioned in this book. Three generation of the Jackson family have placed Dover on the world map as a place of quality daffodils. Newpapers reported at length on all the flower shows and it is through these reports that much of the information has been researched.”--Back cover.
