- Summary:
-
Autobiography of the conductor Nicholas Braithwaite, whose career has extended across 4 continents and more than 15 countries. As the title suggests, as well as an autobiography the book is a discussion of what a conductor does. It is not a formal investigation of that question, rather it is the story of Mr. Braithwaite’s journey through a career as a conductor and a life in music, the places he has been and the people he has seen. And hopefully along the way enough discussion to begin to provide some answers about what a conductor’s life is like, what the job itself is about, and how a conductor relates to an orchestra, together with some attempt to describe what s/he is trying to achieve and how s/he achieves it. Over a long career he has observed many very great conductors, musicians and singers at work, sometimes from very close quarters, and unsurprisingly this has given rise to some thoughts that you may find of interest.
