Lesson and Garnot were naturalists on the voyage of La Coquille commanded by Louis Isidore Duperrey between 1822 and 1825. Published two years following their return to France, this work reports on the indigenous people of New Guinea and includes detailed information on the Aboriginal peoples of Tasmania and Australia, in particular, Port Jackson, discussing the differences between tribes and languages. There is also reference to the zoologists Quoy and Gaimard and their observations and descriptions of the Papuans during their sojourn on the Uranie 1817-1820 commanded by Louis Freycinet. Lesson and Garnot also wrote, prepared, illustrated and produced the Zoologie sections of the report of Duperrey's expedition, which appeared in two volumes, accompanied by an illustrated atlas.
