The papers have been arranged into 15 series. The major series are: 1. General correspondence, 1939-1992. The correspondents include Ray Mathew, R.G. Howarth, Eve Langley, Vivian Smith, David Martin, Bruce Dawe, Olaf Ruhen, Rex Ingamels, Judith Wright, Aviva Ziegler and Jane Covemton. 2. Children's correspondence, 1961-1992. 3. Personal Papers, 1920-1985: Includes correspondence with his wife, financial papers and photographs. 4. Papers relating to Thiele's autobiography, 1974-1982: a typescript entitled "Mini autobiography" and typescripts of oral history interviews with Suzanne Walker (1974) and Hazel de Berg (1977). 5. Writings for children (1952-1993) and adults (1933-1988): handwritten drafts, typescripts and background material. See guide to his Papers, Appendix 1-2. 6. Films, 1974-1988: "Storm Boy", "Water trolley", "Blue fin", "Fire in the stone", "The South Australian" and "The Story makers".
- Biography/History:

Author and educator. Thiele taught in high schools in Adelaide before joining the Wattle Park Teacher's College in late 1950s; became Principal (1965-1973) and Director (1974-1980). Thiele has written more than 50 books, including children's books, radio plays, verse, historical, environmental and educational texts. See "The Oxford companion to Australian literature", p. 676.
