- ix, 209 p. ; 20 cm.
- Notes:
-
- Half-title: Notes of eight years' experience in Australia.
- Previously attributed to Elizabeth P. Ramsay-Laye, who also wrote as “Isabel Massary,” by Ferguson, Miller & McCartney, and AustLit. Kay Walsh (Oxford Companion to Australian Literature, 1994) and Jonathan Wantrup (New Century Books, Catalogue 12, Item 56, July 2002) argue against this attribution, and Wantrup ascribes the work to Mrs. Amelia Carey White (1831-1913) on the basis of a hand written note on the title page of the White family copy: 'By Mrs. A.C. White, wife of Major Hans Th. Fell White, 40th Regt. & of Kilbyne Doneraile, Co. Cork'. Marion Amies, 'Amelia Carey White: author of Social Life and Manners in Australia,' Script & Print, Vol. 41, No. 1, 2017: 21-35, provides conclusive evidence confirming authorship by Amelia Carey White, while also identifying limitations in parts of her narrative that do not reliably reflect the full reality of her life. A second article by Marion Amies, 'Amelia Carey White - her book, her life: Victoria, October 1852 to November 1859,' Victorian Historical Journal, Vol. 89, No. 2, December 2018: 325-346, looks more broadly at at her life and the events described which can be authenticated through other sources.
