MS 2320 comprises papers relating to the National Library of Australia chiefly in the form of working files containing correspondence, reports, memoranda and administrative circulars. Library staff represented in the collection include H.L. White, C.A. Burmester, W.D. Thorn, John Balnaves, P. Fanning, P.H. Saunders, J.D. van Pelt, G.E. Clark, Athol Johnson and T.D. Sprod.
Library matters covered are: oral history and folklore collecting and the work of Hazel de Berg; functions of a map section; pictorial and manuscript collections; Clifford Collection; samples that illustrate the history of printing; Guide to collections of manuscripts relating to Australia; Americana collection; acquisition of material by the Orientalia Section; the supply of Indonesian publications; French Revolutionary pamphlets; E.A. Crome aviation collection; and, the accommodation of collections. Further topics represented are library conferences; Seminar on the International Exchange of Publications in the Indo-Pacific Area; New Guinea bibliography; an exhibition in honour of Sir John Ferguson; shared cataloguing; AACOBS; Territories library services; and, the loan of books to Government House. Staffing matters mentioned in the papers include a classification structure for librarians and library officers, registration examinations, and the appointment of support staff in the User Services Section.
The collection also includes a typescript by Kate Baker titled “John Keith Ewers: novelist and poet” (1947?), and the typescript by David James relating to Augustus Earle, “An English painter in First Empire Brazil”, translated from the Portuguese by George Brodsky (1954?) (2 boxes).

Librarian, author, historian, publisher and bookseller. Thomas Daniel (Dan) Sprod was born in South Australia in 1924. He joined the National Library of Australia in 1951 and held a number of senior positions, including Liaison Officer, New York, 1957-1960. Upon leaving the National Library, he was appointed University Librarian, Morris Miller Library, University of Tasmania in 1966 and held this position until 1976. He was founder and manager of Blubber Head Press, 1978-1991, and owner of the bookshop Astrolabe Books in Hobart. In 1993, Sprod was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to literature as an author, publisher and distributor of works on Tasmanian history.
