Betty Searle, Communist Party activist and feminist, talks about her family background, coming to Australia in 1919, leaving school at 15 to look after her mother, first jobs working in the libraries of Dymocks and Swains. She joined the Communist Party in 1935 or 1936, left Swains in 1939, married for first time and became involved in the political movement through New Theatre League. Searle talks of the influence of Cecilie Milne on her life, her involvement with Unemployed Workers Movement and Women's Unemployed Movement, effect of Petrov Commission on herself and family, second marriage to Rupert Lockwood, visit to Soviet Union and work on publication, "Soviet Woman". Searle talks about studying at the University of New England, her publication, "Silks and calicos : class, gender and the vote" and her current involvement in the Older Women's Network.
