Professor Encel talks about his family background; political and economic situation in Poland after WWI; his parents' decision to come to Australia and life in Melbourne. He then discusses the impact of impending war and getting news from Germany, Poland and Palestine. Encel then talks about studying physics and chemistry at University of Melbourne in 1942 and being directed to move to engineering by Manpower Directorate and joining air force in 1944 as a medical orderly, then returning to University as an ex-services student. He then discusses his involvement in Zionist youth movement; student politics at the time and his views and experiences of the kibbutz movement.
Encel then talks about his work within the Public Service; involvement with Colombo Plan and his decision to become an academic and taking up of a position as tutor at University of Melbourne teaching Australian and British politics. He then discusses his return to Canberra in 1956 as senior lecturer at University College; involvement with Commonwealth Reconstuction Training Scheme; experiences of anti-Semitism and his views on Arthur Calwell. Encel then describes his time at ANU and provides background information on the amalgamation between the original ANU and University college and then talks in some detail about the history of sociology at ANU. He then talks about his move to Sydney in 1960s to University of New South Wales and his interest in science and technology and his involvement with the Labor party as an expert adviser.
