- Summary:
-
A letterpress broadside printed by Derek Lamb from handset wood and metal type, using an 1887 Alexandra Press, on 200 gsm Magnani 'Pescia' paper. Produced as part of a series of large typographic posters for a group exhibition of prints that respond to notions of place and history, as inspired by two publications: 'The Early History of Rockhampton' by JTS Bird, and 'Early Rockhampton' by JG Pattison. Printed in black, with the rhymes 'dead' and 'head' in red, a small angel gravestone ornament preceding 'dead', and a 14 line English hand carved printer's fist (or manicule) pointing at 'head.' Derek Lamb notes: 'Gold Commissioner Thomas Griffin was hanged at the original Rockhampton Goal (the car park at Rockhampton Railway Station) for murdering and robbing his own gold troopers. To add to the notoriety his body was dug up shortly after and the head souvenired. It was rumoured that Dr Callaghan was responsible and had taken the skull to satisfy his interest in phrenology. Perhaps a little rhyme like this was recited in early Rockhampton school yards.'
