- Summary:
-
Lithographically printed, hand coloured with watercolour and lacquer, single-sided concertina-folded panorama in 23 panels (I & J; X & Y are combined; W is omitted). Each panel’s composition is divided into air, land and sea, and displays a broad array of biodiversity, with examples of flora, lepidopera, birds, mammals and fish representative of the letter or letters in alphabetical order, plus a bonus reptile thrown in for good measure (I for ‘Iguane’). The featured specimens hail from almost every corner of the known globe, and illustrate the acquisitorial nature of voyages of discovery at the latter end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. The French name appears above each image and the English below, with occasional editorial additions (for example beneath the ‘Hypostôme’ (hypostomus plecostomus - suckermouth catfish) it reads ‘a fish in the rivers of the south americas’). The featured specimens include the bison, golden phesant, dromedary, Canadian mole, American agave, tea plant, skunk and walrus, and from the Antipodes, ‘Kakatoës’ [‘Kockatoo’ or cockatoo] and ‘Kanguroo’ [kangaroo] under the letter K and under the letter M, “Menure Parkinson” [the superb lyrebird, now Menura novaehollandiae, glossed as “or a bird of the new Holland”]. —Based on a catalogue entry by Maggs Bros Ltd, May 2018.
