- Summary:
-
A letterpress broadside printed by Derek Lamb from handset wood and metal type, using an 1887 Alexandra Press, on 200 gsm Magnani 'Pescia' paper. Produced as part of a series of large typographic posters for a group exhibition of prints that respond to notions of place and history, as inspired by two publications: 'The Early History of Rockhampton' by JTS Bird, and 'Early Rockhampton' by JG Pattison. Cremorne Gardens is in blue 12 line wood type, shadowed by a Victorian border, with the remaining text in black, separated by horizontal wooden rules cut by Nick Summers of Sylvan Wood Type in Sydney. Derek Lamb notes: 'Cremorne Gardens was established on the bank of Moore's Creek (around the area occupied by the Neville Bonner Hostel) in the 1860s by Frenchman Bernard Pene. It comprised four acres of landscaped gardens with the White Horse Hotel, a rotunda and fruit trees. Cremorne Gardens passed hands a number of times and was a long-lived entertainment venue in Rockhampton. This work combines a number of different accounts to portray a typical round of entertainments at the gardens.'
