Summary

“”The Vagabond” was a remarkable author and journalist who became famous in 19th-century Australia for his exposes of social problems. As his identity became known, he decided to embark on a series of voyages by sail and steamship through little-known regions of China, Japan, the west coasts of Canada and America, and many South Pacific islands. His reports were eagerly read by legions of stay-at-home readers. These reinforced his reputation as a realistic observer of daily life in exotic hands – which were already of great interest to European nations intent on expanding their colonial empires. Often in conflict with established authority, the Vagabond gave most of his observations from the ground upwards, adding colour and humanity to the story of those vanished times.”--Back cover.
