The Wirth family came from Germany to Australia around 1856 as a traveling band. They joined up with Ashton’s Circus in Dalby in 1870 and learned to ride and tumble. In 1873 the family went into partnership with circus owner William Barlow in Rockhampton and bought some of his animals and wagons when he retired. They travelled as performing musicians, working with other circuses or putting on their own shows. In 1880 the Wirths organised performances at Haymarket Reserve in Sydney, becoming established as Wirths’ Circus. In 1889 the Wirths’ Circus emulated Barnum and Bailey’s circus and set up their own three ringed circus. They toured extensively overseas for seven years and on their return to Australia, they set up permanent premises in Melbourne, at Olympia Park and in Sydney at Wirth’s Hippodrome in the Haymarket. The circus was always in Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup, where they presented a gold-mounted whip to the winning jockey each year, and they performed in Sydney for the Easter show. They performed at the Brisbane Exhibition each August. Members of the Wirth family continued to run the circus until it closed in 1963.
