An image of the 1297 Inspeximus issue of Magna Carta held by the Australian Parliament.

Biography/History

Magna Carta is a charter agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, on 15 June 1215. It was ammended many times by John's successors. Each reissue was copied and proclaimed in all the counties and major towns in England. Australia's Magna Carta is a copy of the 1297 charter issued by King Edward I, (1272-1307). It is known as an 'inspeximus text' as it inspects and confirms an earlier royal charter. It was sent to the Sheriff of Surrey, Robert de Glamorgan, to be proclaimed in the county court. Thereafter the provenance of the manuscript has been a matter for conjecture, other than at some point it came into the possession of King’s School in Bruton, Somerset, where it lay undisturbed until the 1930s. It was purchased for 12 500 pounds sterling by the Australian Government in 1952 and brought to Canberra, where it has remained in the custody of the Australian Parliament.--adapted from notes on the reverse and from the Magna Carta website of the Department of the Senate, viewed 28 June 2018, http://www.magnacarta.senate.gov.au/
