Geoff Lane began his apprenticeship in 1953 with Tommy Woodcock and started riding in Melbourne in 1954. He was six times champion apprentice before becoming champion jockey. He rode in the 1955, 1956, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1968, and 1970 Melbourne Cups. His best placing in the Cup was 3rd on Dhaulagiri in 1961 (he placed 4th on the same horse in 1960, and also rode it to a win the 1961 W.S. Cox Plate). He initially retired in 1964 at the age of 25 due to weight problems but made a comeback from 1967 to 1971, when he moved to Hong Kong, where he spent the last 34 years of his career , retiring as a jockey in 1979 and as a trainer in 2004, when he reached the compulsory retirement age of 65. He was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2013. -Based on Maurice Cavanough, The Melbourne Cup 1861-2000 (Melbourne : Crown Content, 2001); https://www.racingandsports.com.au/en/hong-kong-racing/end-of-an-era-for-geoff-lane-a-special-tribute-story-43227 and https://www.racing.com/news/2013-02-20/geoff-lane-inducted-into-hall-of-fame, viewed October 2018.
