- Summary:
-
A popular Western Australian identity in the Federation era, 'Jimmy' Gardiner was a businessman, politician and sporting identity who, more through being a vocal critic, strived to develop the state during a tumultuous political period. Tracing his early life and maturation as a businessman, the story shows his successes as president of the WACA to raise the profile of cricket, and encourage national and international visiting teams. His passion for politics saw him rise to prominence in advocating Federation, yet later becoming anti-federalist in his crusade against the Commonwealth's unfair treatment of the state. As the first leader of the WA Country Party, his efforts to support farmers and rail against party politics saw him maligned and ultimately deposed. As state treasurer on two occasions, he aimed for economy in government administration, desperately trying to curb extravagance and financial bleed of the state's coffers during the Great War. And as a land agent and auctioneer, he was foremost in opening up settlement of the Midlands region and fought against the government's apathy towards the derided Midland Railway.
