- Summary:
-
An artist's book produced as part of the artist's Amor Baldessin Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria in 2016/17 (drawing on photographic documentation taken in the artist's neighbourhood from 2009 to 2017, including during her fellowship), which addresses her relationship to place and the impact of changes to her local environment, the inner-Melbourne area of Alphington, Fairfield, the Yarra River and Darebin Creek, and specifically the redevelopment of the former Amcor paper mill at Alphington (fronted by a seven-storey orange brick wall) into a housing and mixed use real estate project. Rosalind Atkins notes: "'Paper Mills' is a flick book made from 92 photogravure plates and hand printed in orange and black. The images on one side of each page printed in black are the documentation of the huge piles of waste paper and cardboard waiting to be recycled at the Amcor paper mill in Alphington before its closure in 2012. The images printed on one side in orange reflect the colour of the bricks that made up the extensive wall that dominated the suburb and skyline. These images document the changing nature of the area as it transitions from industry to a new suburb. The book is in the form of a flick book that allows for the rapid flicking of images that have been influenced by the rapidly changing nature of the suburb in which I live. The transitions from orange to black reflect the shift between active use of the site and its demolition. The binding is simple in form to reflect the ephemeral nature of waste paper and consumption. The photogravure plates used in this project were made with the assistance of Silvi Glattauer." -From the 2018 Libris Awards: The Australian Artists' Book Prize catalogue of entries, http://www.artspacemackay.com.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0016/224062/Libris_Awards_2018_Catalogue_of_Entries_brochure_UPDATED.pdf, viewed September 2018
