The Air Ministry was set up in January 1918 to administer the Royal Air Force. It was headed by the Secretary of State for Air who was advised by the Air Council. From 1919 to 1945 the Ministry was also responsible for regulating civil aviation and from 1920 to 1940 it was responsible for aircraft production. The Ministry was absorbed into the Ministry of Defence in 1964.
