Notes

A very large collection of articles from the period 1912 to 1992. The articles cover many topics including: Early discovery and exploration - race for the South Pole, Australian Antarctic Expedition, Scott, ships (Auroa, Tula, Discovery and Kista Dan), Douglas Mawson and plans to save Mawson's hut in the 1980s. International disputes - 12 nation peace treaty in 1929, international disputes about mining of mineral resources and harvesting of krill by overseas fishing vessels, meetimg of 16 nations about mineral exploration strategy in 1983, multi nation threat to Australia's land claims, and continued international battle to continue mining in 1988. Environmental concerns - concerns about mining reported in 1983, Green Peace action to get the Antarctic declared a World Park with mining, fishing and military establishments prohibited (1985), Australian cabinet resolved not to sign Antarctic Minerals onvention and push for a wilderness park, ban on mining declared in 1990. There are also articles on the movement of the HQ of the Australian Antarctic Division to Hobart in 1981, visits by women to Antarctica, staff funding cuts in 1982 and plans for tourism in 1989.
