The health of Australia's prisoners 2012 uses data from the National Prisoner Health Data Collection (NPHDC), which was conducted over a 2-week period in May 2012 in 74 public and private prisons in all states and territories in Australia except Western Australia. During the NPHDC, there were around 29,000 prisoners in custody in Australia. Detailed data were collected for 794 prison entrants, 387 prison dischargees, just over 4,000 prisoners in custody who visited a clinic, and about 9,000 prisoners who were taking prescribed medication.
