A poetic photographic elegy to the artist’s sister, Daniela Simone D'Addario, developed over two and half years as a direct response to Daniela’s sudden and violent death in 2015. Family photographs and landscapes are used as a catalyst in order to deal with trauma, loss and grief, and to reclaim Daniela’s image and identity through traces of memory and her place in the artist’s shared past. Daniela was thirty-five when her life was taken, but the sisters’ shared childhood and experience of the landscape of the South Coast of New South Wales becomes a form of protest to counteract the use of Daniela’s adult image and way it was adapted and narrated in the media. A related Master of Fine Arts thesis, “Farewell Angelina: Trauma, loss, grief and the photographic” (2018) further explores the social role of art as a poignant place to communicate, discuss and break silence after violent loss, which is given form through the creation of this handmade book. It is archival pigment printed on Japanese mulberry kozo fibre based handmade paper and vellum pages, with an individual inserted hand sewn booklet and inserted separate text pages and gatefolds.
