Summary

'Work for the Dole' is a 'mutual obligation' initiative for income support recipients who are able to work, and is one option for jobseekers to meet their mandatory participation requirements. In 2014/2015, the Australian Government trialled making Work for the Dole mandatory for jobseekers aged 18?29 years, with the trial undertaken in 18 sites. This paper summarises findings from an evaluation of the trial conducted by the Social Research Centre in partnership with the Australian National University, focusing on the impact of mandatory participation on participants' short-term employment and social security payment outcomes, as compared to jobseekers in other regions, as well as its impact on referrals and commencements in jobseeker activities. One issue discussed is participants failing to disclose part-time work, and whether the program affects reporting rates.
