- Biography/History:
-
Melbourne Zoo is the oldest zoo in Australia. It was modelled on London Zoo, and opened in 1862 at Royal Park. However by 1936, the zoo was decrepit and close to bankruptcy. Critics like Alec H. Chisholm (The Argus, 11 March 1936, page 9, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article11020226), called for improvements. In the following period of renewal, a new monkey island was completed by the Public Works Department in August 1938, and an imposing new two storey front entrance (with zoo in prominent curved lettering above the entrance gates) was completed in November 1939.
