- Biography/History:
-
Hazelwood Power Station was considered a modern marvel when it was built in the 1960s. However by the time it ceased operation in March 2017, Hazelwood was Australia's highest polluting power station and one of the world's least efficient. Powered by an adjacent brown coal mine, at 1,600 megawatt capacity the power station provided 5% of Australia's total electricity. After a long period of downsizing by the Victorian Government, Hazelwood was privatised in 1996. The power station and mine continued to be a major employer in the Latrobe Valley during the many decades of its operation, with approximately 750 workers in its employ when it was decommissioned. During its operation Hazelwood became a growing source of tension between environmental and economic interest, featuring heavily in the larger political debate surrounding coal-mining. The eventual closure of the power station was touted as a major win for environmental activists.--Information from acquisitions documentation.
