- Biography/History:
-
HMAS Perth was a light cruiser originally commissioned into the British Royal Navy in mid-1936 under the name HMS Amphion. The Royal Australian Navy purchased the vessel and re-named it HMAS Perth on 29 June 1939. Prior to the outbreak of World War II, HMAS Perth visited New York to represent Australia at the World's Fair in August 1939. From the start of the war in September 1939, the ship spent six months escorting convoys and patrolling the Western Atlantic and the Caribbean. After her return to Australia at the end of March 1940, HMAS Perth engaged in similar operations in Australian waters before she was transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet at the end of 1940. The ship returned to Australia in August 1941 and resumed similar patrol duties. HMAS Perth left Australia for the last time on 14 February 1942 and was sunk in the early hours of 1 March 1942 in the Battle of Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra. Over half her crew of 686 were killed in the battle and only 218 of the survivors survived captivity to return home after the war. —Based on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Perth_(D29), and other sources, viewed September 2019.
