The Hobart Railyards was identified as the preferred new site for the redevelopment of the Royal Hobart Hospital in April 2007. The recommendation of the site was subject to further investigation of various aspects of the site, such as potential sea level rise and a geotechnical study of the reclaimed area. Tasmanian consultancy firm Pitt & Sherry were commissioned by the Department of Health and Human Services to carry out the required investigations.
