"This Plan is about making the most of the strengths and comparative advantages of the north west region. It is also about recognising and supporting those sectors of the economy, such as retail, hospitality, and other services that play such a major role in the employment, vibrancy and liveability of the region and its communities. There are many opportunities for growth and development in the north west. By 2016, the fibre optic footprint provided by the roll-out of the National Broadband Network (NBN) will set the north west apart from other Australian regional areas. Stretching from Devonport to Wynyard, it will assist in integrating the region's population and its industry, driving significant growth in the region's digital economy. The region is also leading the resurgence of Tasmania's dairy industry, highlighting confidence in our rural sector. Investment projects planned or underway include Lion's 150-million [dollar] plus cheese manufacturing investment at Burnie and King Island, Tasmanian Dairy Products' 75 million [dollar] milk powder plant at Circular Head, and the 180 million [dollar] investment by Van Diemen's Land Company, which will treble milk production at Australia's largest dairy farm."--Minister's foreword.
