"Australian Ballet performs "The Merry Widow". The Australian Ballet has performed the timeless Franz Lehar operetta "The Merry Widow" as a fill length three act ballet. This is the first time the 70-year-old operetta has been translated into a full-scale ballet. The copyright holder in Vienna agreed after seeing to scenario prepared by Sir Robert Helpmann, the Australian Ballet's artistic director, and being convinced of his intention to respect the traditions of the operetta. Two of the principal dancers of the Australian Ballet, Marilyn Rowe, as the widow, and John Meehan, as Danilo, in a pas de deux in the company's world premiere of its production of "The Merry Widow" in Melbourne.
