Summary

MS Acc00/165 comprises papers relating to Booker's writings, including drafts of his books, an unpublished book on the politics of the 1930s, research material and his Canberra times articles. Papers relating to Booker's career include a large quantity of photographs and cuttings and also personal files on his diplomatic postings (2 boxes, 7 cartons, 1 small carton, 2 fol. boxes).

The Acc00/169 instalment includes further papers of Malcolm and Roxana Booker (4 boxes, 15 cartons, 1 metal box, 1 oversize item).

Biography/History

Ambassador, commentator and author. Malcolm Booker worked for the Australian government as a diplomat and foreign affairs officer for many years. Booker's earliest postings included Manila, 1950-1952, and Rangoon where he was Charge d'Affaires, 1952-1953. As ambassador, Booker was posted to Thailand in 1960, Italy, 1970-1974 and Yugoslavia, Romania and Bulgaria, 1974-1976. He took early retirement at the end of his term in Belgrade. As a commentator on Australian foreign policy, Booker wrote a weekly foreign affairs column for The Canberra times. He was also the author of several publications, including The last domino: aspects of Australia's foreign relations (1976) in which he argued for a more independent stance for Australia in world affairs. Booker was married to Roxana Booker, an American who worked for the United States diplomatic service. Booker died on 15 July, 1998.
