Dave, humble purveyor of tea in Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market, has, for as long as he can remember, held an idiosyncratic view of marriage. He convinced himself and insisted to others that love – true, abiding love – only comes with marriage in the first instance and then forms and grows through the mutual experiences that follow in the subsequent years. So far, he has been unable to put his philosophy into practice because, frankly, most of the women he meets find his obsession a real turn-off, especially as he ‘pops the question’ almost before any date let alone relationship has started. His close circle of friends, some of whom have known Dave from childhood, have heard this marriage philosophy for as long as Dave has been spouting it. At a social gathering, having their collective ears bent on the subject for yet another time, in a moment of less-than-serious distraction, this group of mates determine both to put Dave on the spot and his axiom to the test. They plan to organise a complete wedding for Dave: to find him an official, licenced celebrant, choose a reception location and, although they nearly overlooked the need, to select a bride – by competitive audition. The search for all these things is complicated by the differing views of the individuals of what makes a suitable officiant, a suitable venue and, in the end, a suitable bride. Nevertheless, despite the long history the group has of ‘merry japes’ that are often started but less often finished, this one is – from conception to execution!
