- [Melbourne?] : [Cavalier Hats?], [approximately 1930?]
- 1 poster : colour lithograph ; 48 cm X 32 cm
- Summary:
-
A poster promoting Cavalier Hats with artwork showing a bearded seventeenth century English Cavalier figure in brightly coloured clothing standing with his sword pointing down in front of a fawn coloured example of one of the manufacturer's hats. The lettering, in red and orange capitals, appears against a green panel below. An artist's monogram, possibly representing either OIC or OTC, appears lower middle right, and the printer's logo appears bottom right. The imperfect registration of the printed borders around the upper half of the poster, and the retention of white paper around the upper area, may suggest even this version is still a proof, and the poster is unfinished or may have been submitted to the client for approval in this form. Alterrnatively, perhaps the poster may have been intended to be pasted onto cardboard and trimmed to this outline shape as a shop counter point of sale display card.
- Biography/History:

Cavalier Hats appear to have been first advertised in newspapers in 1926 and were still available in the mid-1950s. They were made of rabbit felt, lined with silk, offered in a variety of shades, and proudly promoted as "Australian made" or even as "the Australian Stetson." The name and location of the company that manufactured the hat is not known, but they appear to have been widely distributed across Australia, probably from a warehouse in Flinders Lane, which was then the centre of the clothing trade.
The Moore-Young Litho Co. Pty Ltd was formed in April 1924 to carry into effect an agreement for the purchase of the Iithographic department of Wllke and Co. Pty. Ltd. Their registered office was at 241 William Street, Melbourne. Capital, £20,000 in £1 shares. Directors: Alcon Ninus Ascot Bowman, Herbert Henry William Wilke, and Albert Barnard Moore (The Herald, 9 April 1924, page 16, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article244223993). Don Hauser, Printers of the streets and lanes of Melbourne (1837-1975), Melbourne: Nondescript Press, 2006, page 108 indicates they were acquired by F. W. Niven during the 1930s. In June 1939, lithographer's plant from the company, including a poster enlarging camera, litho plates and stones, was auctioned under instructions from the official receiver in bankruptcy.
