"From the title of this book it would be logical to assume that the School of Chemistry was exactly as old as the University of New South Wales itself. However, the university grew out of the Sydney Technical College (STC) which, in turn, grew out of the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts (SMSA). As SMSA began teaching chemistry in 1871, the present School of Chemistry has a continuous history back to that date. This book traces the school's history from its origins to the present. It is a story of boom, bust and rebirth. After steady growth through the first half of the twentieth century, peeking at 49 staff members in 1976, the school gradually declined almost to a vestige by 2007. The regrowth since then has been spectacular and it is now possible to say that the school has never been stronger. Through the good times and bad, the school has sought to keep itself relevant with students by continually reviving and modifying its courses and tracking technology, with the community by offering formal postgraduate courses, outreach activities such as summer schools and analytical services, and with research by maintaining its instrumental plant at a high level."--Dust jacket gate fold.
