- Summary:
-
A Christmas or New Year’s greeting card depicting a picnic scene with dancers and a musician, and two Aboriginal men on the right watching the activities. Food and a bottle of wine are spread on a white table cloth; a man sitting on the grass pours wine into a champagne coupe glass, and another man sitting on a box under a tree plays a cornet (or trumpet). The caption, “May we all meet as happy this day twelvemonth,” appears in small capitals below the image in a broken border. The verso is printed in blue and white with a central roundel of Britannia facing an Aborigine, surrounded by medallion crests of the Australian states and a poem in a panel below: “The new young world with song and dance / Doth herald in this time of bliss. / Australia in they strength advance, / And England’s voice doth wish thee this!” These words suggest the Advance Australia movement in the lead up to Federation in 1901. “Copyright” appears in the lower left corner.
