- Summary:
-
This body of work continues Melbourne photographer Rohan Hutchinson's interest in Japanese architecture and representation of space both within artwork and publication form. It draws inspiration from historic Japanese Ukiyo artist Hiroshige Utagawa and how he broke away from traditional mathematical perspective formulas of the time, creating a new way of seeing the natural and built landscape. The black and white large format photographs were taken in the Japanese modernist city Sapporo. The design is informed by layout and use of full bleed black pages found late 1960s and early 1970s issues of the Japanese photography magazine Kamera Mainichi. Other colour used within the publication is derived from pigment data from Hiroshige Utagawa’s work 'Kinryuzan Temple Akasaka, c. 1830' (provided by the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia). The book is presented unbound so that the nuances of the architectural landscape can be explored in a series of collages. —Based on information from the artist.
