TAPE 1: Donald Tier, born in New York, recalls his family background; family involvement in theatre and radio; moving to Australia at age 3; joining Militia in 1937; army service in World War II; involvement and training in radar; transfer to Australian Imperial Force and promotion to captain in 1942; radar activites in various countries during the war; discharge from Army with rank of Major at end of the War; working for Westinghouse Company as a sales engineer; screen-printing business; returned to Army in 1951 as range operator at Woomera (guided weapons).
TAPE 2: Discussed World War II radar operations in more detail; operations at Woomera; rocket-firing accident; weapons development and policy in Australia; promotion and appointment to head Army's Ceremonial, Discipline and Welfare branch; discusses scientific, research and development and weapons policy roles; promotion to Colonel and role as Deputy Director of inspection; setting up Trials and Evaluations Directorate and make recommendations on new tanks. TAPE 3: Continues discussion of evaluation of army equipment; setting up of Analytical Studies Group; Australia's decision to acquire new submarines; retirement from Army in 1976; work in futures market; role as private secretary to NSW Governor Sir Roden Cutler; moving to Canberra; setting up ANZAAS Secretariat; appointment as bursar for University House at ANU; secretary of International Federation for Advancement of Science and Technology (IFAAST); general discussion of Tier's career; impressions of Army administration.
