The titles of these three artists’ books refer to a line by Larry Levis, “A hemline of smoke, sky, & a serene indifference?”, from his poem ‘To a Wren on Calvary’. Because through action comes hope, the books were created to nestle beneath this line. They require the reader to take action in order to see the full collage clearly, to tear open the perforated fore-edge of each page spread to see through the smoke, to see what lies beneath, or ahead, or in the past. The hemline of smoke is both a representation of bushfire smoke caused by the megafires of 2019 to 2020, and a reference to the disappearance of our natural world due to land clearing, species extinctions, and the climate change emergency. Featured within the 300+ digital layers are referenced early European depictions of Australian natural history common to our memory bank, hand-coloured observations of our trespass, a reflection about history and memory — from where we have come, where we now are, and where we are headed — as descendants of the colonisers. —Adapted from the artists’ website, http://gracialouise.com/smoke, viewed March 2020.
