Summary

Authentic travels of Madame Giovanni (nee vicomtesse Gabrielle Anne Saint-Mars, 1804-1872) from 1845 to 1854 around the world which began at Mauritius proceeding to New Zealand, Tasmania, Australia, Tahiti, Hawaiian islands, California and Mexico, finishing in Paris. Her experiences or notes were given to Alexandre Dumas who wrote them into a bestseller.

Notes

Australian references relate to life and conditions in Tasmania, Victoria and the goldfields, Sydney. She observes the upper classes, convicts, Aboriginal Australians, ordinary citizens and attends vice-regal functions.

References to Cook in Hawaii and his death.
