- Summary:
-
This policy provides information on Fisheries Queensland requirements for certain types of aquaculture activities authorised under the Fisheries Act 1994, including: flood prone land; exotic freshwater fish species; barramundi cultured in inland catchments; use of aquacultured product for bait. The objective of this policy is to assist in achieving the main purpose of the Fisheries Act 1994 to protect fisheries resources to ensure that they are used in an ecologically sustainable way for aquaculture by: minimising the risk of translocation of aquacultured fisheries resources into natural waterways, particularly where they are non-indigenous to the area, or they have the potential to impact on the genetic diversity of wild populations; minimising the risk of introducing disease agents into wild populations; minimising the socio-economic impacts that may result from the above risks. The policy has been developed within the framework of Ecologically Sustainable Development. The policy will be used as a basis for: assessment criteria for new applications; setting reasonable and relevant conditions of approval; auditing of aquaculture operations; guiding the development of best practice within the industry. This document will be of interest to anyone involved in the management of these four potentially high-risk aquaculture activities in Queensland.
