Personal diary of Sir Thomas Rainsford (Tom) Bavin, dating from 1902, when he was private secretary to the first Prime Minister of Australia, Sir Edmund Barton. The diary, that includes entries for almost every day of the year, offers Bavin's personal insights into party matters and the discussions with and opinions of people he and Barton dealt with plus dated evidence of meetings, travels and other activities and in the middle year of Barton's Prime Ministership.

Politician, barrister and journalist. Private secretary of Sir Edmund Barton (1901-1903) and Alfred Deakin (1903-1904). Australian correspondent of Morning Post 1907-1911. Nationalist Member of the N.S.W. Legislative Assembly 1917-1935. Premier of New South Wales, 1927-1930.
