Summary

This artists’ book features both the machine and hand sewing of Margaret Dietrich and a text that in Peter Lyssiotis' words “tracks the heart’s false starts, its chance encounters and the dead ends it wanders in and out of — it asks who we become when we’re fumbling through grief.” Peter Lyssiotis notes that the craft of sewing and stitching (which resembles some of the hand craft processes used to assemble his books); the collage/montage of natural fabrics; the use of a limited palette of red, black and white; the exposed binding, using elements of the Coptic book tradition; tears, loose threads, and needle holes; collectively suggest a half-finished look, a ruin that invites closer examination and the exercise of the imagination, and provide a thread for the reader to follow, like Theseus did in the labyrinth.
