Summary

Joan Whetton (d. 2005), a non-Indigenous professional social worker, speaks about a 1959 visit to the Northern Territory during which she did lay work at the Daly River Mission, and about her later work with the Catholic Family Welfare Bureau in New South Wales, the Darwin Catholic Missions and the Office of Aboriginal Affairs. Whetton also speaks about her work with the Bega Valley Aboriginal Advancement Association, official attitudes towards Aboriginal people during her employment in the Northern Territory in the late 1960s and attitudinal changes among social workers in the 1970s.
